Meta has made a significant move in the virtual reality (VR) market with the unveiling of the Quest 3S, a more affordable VR headset priced at $299. This new device is positioned as a comprehensive computing tool, directly competing with Apple’s Vision Pro, which retails at a hefty $3,499.

The Quest 3S, set to hit the market in October, is designed for a wide range of applications, including movie viewing, gaming, and VR fitness. Meta is emphasizing the device's multitasking capabilities, highlighting its ability to run multiple applications simultaneously. For instance, users can operate up to four applications at once on floating screens, such as YouTube, a web browser, Amazon Music, and Meta’s app store. Although the demonstration faced some technical issues, such as the Amazon Music app crashing, the potential is clear.

One of the standout features of the Quest 3S is its enhanced 'passthrough' technology, which uses external cameras and sensors to provide a live video feed within the headset. This allows users to interact with their surroundings while wearing the device, a feature that could significantly improve user experience. A dedicated button has been added to activate this passthrough feature, making it more convenient.

Meta's investment in VR technology is substantial, with over $65 billion spent since acquiring Oculus in 2014. CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended this investment, stating it is a strategic move to prevent Apple from dominating future hardware markets. Despite Apple's entry into the VR space, the sales of the Vision Pro have been modest, with reports indicating fewer than 1 million units sold, largely due to its high price.

The 'S' in Quest 3S stands for 'start,' signifying a new beginning for users in the VR realm. The device includes features like an airplane mode and a simulated large movie theater experience, similar to those found in Apple's Vision Pro.

In addition to the Quest 3S, Meta has announced a price reduction for the previous Quest 3 model, dropping the 512GB version from $650 to $500. The Quest 3 features more advanced lenses and a higher resolution display compared to the Quest 3S.

This move by Meta is crucial as it aims to make VR technology more accessible and mainstream. With the Quest 3S, Meta is not only targeting gamers but also positioning the device as a versatile computing tool that can be used in various aspects of daily life.
