CEOs Unimpressed by Trump's Policy Proposals at Business Roundtable Meeting
Former President Donald Trump's policy proposals, including tax cuts and deregulation rollbacks, received a lukewarm response from top CEOs during the Business Roundtable's quarterly meeting. According to multiple attendees, Trump's lack of clear explanations and meandering style left many CEOs underwhelmed.
One CEO in attendance expressed his disappointment, stating, "Trump doesn't know what he's talking about." This sentiment was echoed by several other CEOs, who described Trump as "remarkably meandering," "could not keep a straight thought," and "all over the map." Trump's plans for reducing taxes and easing business regulations were particularly criticized for lacking detail.
Despite the lackluster reception, Trump's campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, issued a statement commending the warm welcome the former president received and highlighting the applause during the Q-and-A session. However, two attendees reported that Trump's energy during the meeting was noticeably subdued, with no discernible applause for him during his remarks.
Trump discussed lowering the corporate tax rate from 21% to 20%, explaining his choice as a "round number." This comment left several CEOs perplexed. In 2023, corporate income taxes contributed approximately $420 billion to federal revenues, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The business community has faced challenges under President Joe Biden's administration, with aggressive antitrust enforcement, pharmaceutical price caps, and progressive tax policies.
