President Joe Biden faced intense scrutiny as he delivered a rare solo press conference in Washington, amid mounting pressure to drop out of the presidential race against Donald Trump. This high-stakes event aimed to demonstrate his ability to handle unscripted questions following a challenging debate on June 27.
During the press conference, Biden made a verbal slip, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as "Vice Trump" in response to an initial question. This mistake added to the series of gaffes, including a previous incident at a NATO event honoring Ukraine where he mistakenly introduced President Volodyr Zelkyy as "President Putin" before correcting himself.
The pressure on Biden's campaign has been escalating, with at least 14 Democratic lawmakers publicly urging him to step aside and make way for a new nominee. This solo press conference, the first since November 2023, was seen as a crucial opportunity for Biden to regain momentum and prove his competence.
