The Dominance of Existing Intellectual Property in 2025 Movies
The box office landscape for 2025 is set to be dominated by sequels, prequels, and remakes, a trend that has been gaining momentum since 2024. Major studios, including Universal, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, and Lionsgate, are heavily investing in existing intellectual properties to attract audiences and boost ticket sales.
Why IP Films Are on the Rise
In 2024, all of the top 10 films were based on established intellectual properties, and this pattern is expected to continue and expand in 2025. Projections indicate that between 50% and 70% of the releases from these leading studios will be linked to familiar franchises. This strategy is not new, but it has become more pronounced due to the increasing selectivity of consumers regarding their entertainment expenditures.
Impact of Streaming and Pandemic
Even before the pandemic and the rise of streaming content, franchise films were a significant part of the domestic box office. In 2019, franchise films accounted for 33% to 62% of total releases from major studios like Warner Bros., Sony, Lionsgate, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox (before its merger with Disney). Disney, in particular, stood out with nine out of its ten films stemming from recognized IP.
The pandemic and subsequent writers' and actors' strikes in 2023 further solidified the reliance on IP, as several titles were delayed and pushed into the 2025 calendar. Despite these challenges, the 2024 box office saw notable successes, with films like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and Despicable Me 4 contributing to a revenue that exceeded analysts’ expectations, albeit with an 11.3% decline from the previous year and a 25% drop compared to pre-pandemic figures.
Upcoming IP-Driven Films
The 2025 film calendar is packed with high-profile sequels and remakes. Notable releases include a third installment of Avatar in mid-December, which is expected to carry ticket sales into 2026. The summer of 2026 will see the release of a new Avengers film, followed by a Mandalorian Star Wars movie during Memorial Day weekend. Other significant releases include a second Super Mario Bros. Movie, a fifth Toy Story, a fifth Shrek, another Hunger Games film, a Supergirl movie, and an additional Batman film from Matt Reeves.
Balance Between Franchise and Original Content
While the reliance on existing IP is clear, there is still room for original content. Shawn Robbins, founder of Box Office Theory, notes that some of the most successful films in recent years have been sequels or adaptations, but there remains a diverse array of original content available. For instance, 2025 will see new original films from directors like Jordan Peele, J.J. Abrams' production company, and Ryan Coogler, which could stand out amidst the plethora of franchise films.
Financial Projections
Wall Street analysts do not anticipate the domestic box office to surpass $10 billion until 2026, a figure that has not been achieved since 2019. The 2025 lineup, while promising, reflects Hollywood's continued reliance on familiar franchises to attract audiences and drive revenue.
